Many younger people today do not understand the concept of dry cleaning your clothing, and have not been raised in an environment where dry cleaning has been explained.  This probably has a lot to do with culture today, and not having as many situations where formal clothing is necessary.  Many places of employment no longer require their employees to wear a suit or even business attire to work, and the situations that occur outside of work are more and more casual every year.  This does not negate the fact that there are occasions that require formal clothing like suits or more high end dresses, and that more delicate fabrics need special care in order to continue looking good.  This is where dry cleaning comes into play, in order to not only keep your clothes looking good after they are worn but also extending their life span.  Formals are not cheap, and making sure that they last as long as possible makes sense.

The first thing to do is to probably explain what dry cleaning is, so that younger people understand why it is necessary.  A suit or any other formal piece of clothing is generally made from materials and weaves that do not hold up to water saturation without being stained or ruined.  Even worse would be to put an article of formal clothing into a washing machine or dryer at home, as there is almost no way that the materials will come out looking sharp afterward.  Since these fabrics cannot withstand water saturation, how are you to clean them to remove stains, oils from your skin or odors? The dry cleaning process uses specialized chemicals to bathe the garments, then these chemicals are removed from the clothes using a special machine that extrudes them out.  After the clothes are bathed in the liquid, they are then pressed using an industrial iron in order to remove any wrinkling.  The dry cleaning process is not dry at all, that is just the term used for cleaning without water.

Dy cleaning is going to help your clothes age for a longer period of time.  Formal clothes are not like t shirt or jeans where you can just wear them and wash them until they are ruined.  Formal clothing costs far more, and because of not only the cost but also because formal clothing is designed to look more crisp than street clothing, dry cleaning is necessary to keep that look.  If a formal garment is not dry cleaned regularly it will begin to look sloppy after only a few wearings, and it will begin to smell.  The oils in your skin coming in contact with clothing will quickly stain it, or turn whites to yellow.  If these are allowed to build up there will be a point where the clothes cannot be saved by dry cleaning, and must be completely replaced.  Dry clean your formal and semi-formal clothing as often as you can, preferably after one or two wearings.  This is the only way to keep it looking good and lasting longer.

While most people have washed clothes in a washing machine and then either dried them in a drier or hung them to dry, they probably know no more about the process than that a combination of water and soap is used to remove dirt and debris from the clothes before they are rinsed and then dried.  Even more of a mystery to most people is dry cleaning, which is the process of cleaning clothing without using water as the solvent.  Most people have taken their clothes to a dry cleaner, only to pick them up a few hours or days later and marvel at how clean and pressed they are, without ever really thinking about how this process works.
